Portsmouth: New Museum, 31st May 2013

The new museum dedicated to the Mary Rose, the flagship of Henry VIII, will open its doors on 31st May 2013. Designed by Wilkinson Eyre Architects, it integrates the original hull from the ship in a renovated dry dock, coupled with a virtual hull demonstrating original artefacts.

Ship yard: competition for young architects

A competition for young architects on the theme of ship yard conversions has been launched. The aim is to transform ship yards into “Smart harbours”: recreational zones for tourists and local residents that harness new technology to create features such as modular spaces and interactive parks… Proposals will be examined next July on this issue that is relevant to many port cities.

Bordeaux: award-winning ideas for the wine warehouses

The transformation and disappearance of certain wine warehouses, once the scene of the port of Bordeaux’s wine trade, have caught the eye of Unesco. The award-winners of the ideas competition: « Habiter les chais » (« living in a wine warehouse ») presented a number of options for re-cycling and re-using these heritage buildings. The first prize was for a housing scheme, but other award-winning proposals included baths, gardens, a restaurant partnership, etc.

Request For Proposals: Governors Island (New York)

A Request for Proposals has been launched for the reconversion of more than forty 19th and 20th century historic buildings on the old military base of Governors Island. The project includes nearly 93,000 m2 for educational, cultural or commercial use. This is a new stage for the site, where more than 12 ha of parks and public spaces, conceived by West 8, are currently under development. Closing date: 14 March 2013

Senalia Company have launched an ideas competition for the artistic, landscaping and architectural enhancement of the four grain silos on the Elie Peninsular which contribute in making Rouen the top European grain and cereals export port and the world’s top port for wheat exports.
